LAS VEGAS – Josh Terao reached the championship match of the 133-pound bracket, leading three American University wrestlers who placed Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational wrestling tournament.
American finished 11th out of 46 scoring teams with 56.5 points. Ohio State topped the team standings with 155.5 points, followed by Michigan with 140 and Arizona State with 113.5. Nine of the top 20 teams in the nation were in a strong national-level field.
"Coming out of this event, the toughest college tournament outside the NCAA championships in March, with an 11th-place team finish is very exciting," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "We definitely wrestled to our potential this weekend.
"Josh turned in some notable performances, taking down a number of ranked opponents along the way. His second-place finish is a great result considering the field that 133 offered. He battled like a true champion and earned his victories by showing heart and effort. This proves that Josh can compete for a national title when he brings the right mindset.
"Jeric brought back his pinning ways throughout this event. He dominated opponents, racking up a lot of near-fall points and earning four falls along the way. Jeric can be a national-championship contender with more effort like he showed here in Vegas.
"Michael truly battled his way to eighth place. Every match was a tightly contested bout, and he created some winning opportunities through sheer determination.
"I'm so proud of this squad," said Moore. "We showed what we can do and we still have some room to improve. It will give us a boost of confidence as we head into finals and prepare for the Wilkes Open later this month."
