Ten American Wrestlers Earn EIWA Academic Achievement Award

WASHINGTON – All 10 starters on the American University wrestling team were selected for Academic Achievement Awards from the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, the league office announced this week.

Seniors Jason Grimes, Cole Moseley, Esteban Gomez-Rivera and Tom Page joined juniors Brett Dempsey and Jeric Kasunic and sophomores Jack Mutchnik, Joe Salvi, Michael Sprague and Josh Terao as selections.

"Our program is ecstatic to see the efforts of our young men paying off with such accolades," said head coach Teague Moore. "The EIWA is a prestigious group to be associated with and for our wrestlers to earn such recognition makes our staff, our administration, and our University proud.

"It also helps us fulfill part of our program's goal which encompasses success on the wrestling mats, and in the classroom. This goal is one of many that we are constantly working toward as a program."

Page and Gomez-Rivera also earned the academic awards last year.

The 10 picks were the most by any school in the league, which includes 16 Division I institutions. Brown University and Harvard University were next with eight each.

It marked the second year the EIWA has presented academic awards and the second year that American has had more selections than any other school in the league, which is made up mostly of schools from the Patriot and Ivy leagues.

Wrestlers are eligible for the EIWA All-Academic Awards if they achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better and participated in the league tournament. Student-athletes could also be honored with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 if they qualified for the NCAA Championships through the EIWA.
