Terao Advances; Grimes and Kasunic Fall in NCAA Wrestling First Round Matches

ST. LOUIS — American University redshirt sophomore Josh Terao advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Scottrade Center.

In front of a sold-out crowd, Terao, the 11th seed in the tournament won by major decision over Ohio State's Jose Rodriguez, 13-4.

Terao trailed, 4-0 early in the first period, but tied the contest with a takedown and a near fall. After the second, he led 8-4 on a reversal and near fall. Terao finished off Rodriguez with two more near falls and secured riding time points.

Terao will meet No. 6 Ethan Lizak from Minnesota in bout 186. Lizak defeated Christian Moody from Oklahoma by a 10-8 decision. 

Jason Grimes fell in his first round match of the 184-pound weight class to No. 15 Steve Schneider from Binghamton, 3-2. Schneider took a 2-0 lead with a takedown at 1:21. Grimes then muscled back with an escape at 1:12 and then tied the match with an escape at 1:34 of the second period. Schneider won the bout with an escape at 1:59.

Grimes will face Mitch Sliga from Northwestern in bout 317 of the consolation round of 16 later this evening. Sliga fell to No. 2 Bo Nickal by a 15-0 technical fall in 3:21.

Jeric Kasunic fell by pinfall to the top-seeded competitor in the 197-pound weight class, J'den Cox of Missouri. Cox won the match in 2:20 but did score points with a takedown and near fall.

Kasunic will meet Austin Severn of Central Michigan in bout 332 of the consolation round of 16. Severn fell to Steban Cervantes from Navy, 6-4 in sudden victory.

All three Eagles will compete in at the Scottrade Center beginning at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT on ESPN and ESPN3.
