Wrestling Kicks Off Two-Dual Weekend on Friday

WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team is heading into its final month of duals before the EIWA Championships, starting with a trip to Bucknell on Friday, Feb. 3.  The Eagles will face off against the Bison starting at 7 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa., before returning home to face Binghamton at noon on Sunday, Feb. 5.

American is 3-6 overall this season and is still in search of its first EIWA victory with a 0-5 record.  Bucknell is 7-4 for the season and 4-1 in the EIWA.  Binghamton sits just behind Bucknell on the current EIWA dual meet standings with their 7-4 overall record and 7-2 conference slate.

THE SERIES
The Eagles are 4-20 against the Bison since their first match in 1966.  AU went on a three-match winning streak from 2011-13 before falling in the previous three matches from 2014-16.

SCOUTING AMERICAN
The Eagles are coming off a pair of back-to-back duals in Philadelphia on Sunday, Jan. 29, against Penn and Drexel.  Although AU dropped both matches, falling to Penn with a 21-14 final score, and 26-14 against Drexel the team emerged with some big highlights, including a ranked victory for senior Esteban Gomez-Rivera.

Gomez-Rivera remains the only undefeated Eagle in dual competitions after recording a huge win against Drexel's Kevin Devoy.  He overpowered the No. 11-ranked athlete in the 133-pound weight class with a 2-1 decision.

Sophomore Josh Terao, currently ranked 15th for 125-pounds, also tallied a pair of victories with decisions over Penn's Jeremy Schwartz and Drexel's Tanner Shoap.

Six of the Eagles set to compete on Friday earned spots on the first of four NCAA Coaches Polls, as released by the national office on Jan. 20.  Terao leads the pack with a No. 10 national ranking, followed by Gomez-Rivera at No. 27 (133), No. 27 Jeric Kasunic (197), No. 30 Jack Mutchnik (141), No. 30 Michael Sprague (149) and No. 30 Jason Grimes (184).

SCOUTING BUCKNELL
The Bison are entering the weekend on a five-match winning streak behind the efforts of three nationally-ranked performers.  Victor Lopez (157) leads that grouping with at No. 14 in the NCAA, followed by Tom Sleigh (197) at No. 16 and Tyler Smith (141) at No. 19.

Sleigh is coming into the match on a 14-bout winning streak.

SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats are also entering the weekend off of a win after they overpowered Sacred Heart with a 34-7 final score on Saturday, Jan. 28.  Binghamton is led by Steve Schneider, who is ranked 15th by Intermat for 184-pounds, and Vincent DePrez, who comes in at No. 32 in the NCAA for 165-pounds.
