Wrestling Falls to Penn, Drexel in Pair of Road Duals

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The American University wrestling team took on back-to-back duals on Sunday, Jan. 29, as the team traveled to Philadelphia to face fellow-EIWA foes, Pennsylvania and Drexel.  Despite a pair of wins from both sophomore Josh Terao and senior Esteban Gomez-Rivera, the Eagles fell to the Quakers, 21-14, and the Dragons, 26-15.

"These were two tough, hard-fought losses today, but we came away with some big win, including one for Esteban Gomez-Rivera against the No. 11 nationally ranked Kevin Devoy from Drexel," Head Coach Teague Moore said. "Esteban is a captain, and it showed today.  He led the team by example, and we're happy to see him get that win.  Captains Brett Dempsey and Tom Page also led the team well, putting up good battles against some tough opponents.  This is something our team needed to see today, and we can use this to build positively moving forward."

American started the day at Pennsylvania, where Terao and Gomez-Rivera notched their first wins of the day.  It was junior Brett Dempsey, though, who got the scoring going for the Eagles, beating out Penn's Tyler Hall with a 12-2 major decision.

No. 15 Terao followed with another three points for the Eagles, holding Penn's Jeremy Schwartz to a scoreless match with a 6-0 decision.

Gomez-Rivera kept the scoring going for the Eagles, as he clinched another four points with an 18-6 major decision over Tristin DeVincenzo.

Sophomore Jack Mutchnik closed out the scoring for AU after a pair of late points in the third period gave him the 2-1 advantage over AJ Vindici.

Terao returned to clinch another decision over Drexel's Tanner Shoap, closing the bout with a 9-2 advantage.  Gomez-Rivera also took down his second decision of the night, recording a huge win over No. 11 Kevin Devoy, 2-1.

Junior Jeric Kasunic also highlighted the matches, recording a fall against Drexel's Joshua Murphy at the 2:37 mark.

"We have a quick turnaround with Friday and Sunday duals next weekend," Moore said. "We'll need to recover, prepare, and be ready to execute.  I believe we got better today, despite the losses."

The Eagles will return to the mat on Feb. 3 with a trip to Bucknell.  For the latest on AU Wrestling, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Wrestling.
