Wrestling Set to Pull Double-Duty This Weekend

WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team is on the road this weekend for a pair of duals at Penn and Drexel on Sunday, Jan. 29.

The Eagles, who are 3-4 overall in duals this season and 0-3 against EIWA, will start the day at noon with a matchup against fellow-EIWA foes, Penn.  The Quakers are also 0-3 against EIWA opponents, and come in at 2-4 overall.

The team will then make a quick turnaround  and head up the road to face Drexel at 6 p.m.  The Dragons sit just above American in the NCWCA/NDS Mid-Major Rankings at No. 10 with their 8-5 overall record.  The Eagles are sitting at No. 11 in the poll.

The Eagles are coming off of a 31-3 loss to Lehigh on Saturday, Jan. 14.  Esteban Gomez-Rivera tabbed the only win of the day for AU, trailing Lehigh's Joe Lobeck 3-0 early in the third period before getting a pair of takedowns to close the match with a 7-6 lead.

Six of the Eagles scheduled to compete this weekend were ranked in the first of four NCAA Coaches Polls, as released by the national office on Jan. 20.

Josh Terao leads the Eagles in the rankings, coming in at No. 10 for the 125-pound weight class.  He also ranks 15th in the InterMat national polls after placing third at the Midlands Championship and tallying a win against No. 14 Drew Templeman of Wyoming.

Esteban Gomez-Rivera is 27th at 133 pounds after successful appearances at the Southeast Open (2nd), Wolfpack Open (5th) and won all three matches at the AU Duals after missing a month with an injury.

Jack Mutchnick is 30th at 141 pounds coming off a second-place finish at the Wolfpack Open.

Michael Sprague is also 30th at 149 pounds after upsetting Wyoming's Cole Mendenhall (20). Sprague also won against Army's Luke Weiland at the AU Duals. He took first in the Freshman/Sophomore division at the Southeast Open.

James Grimes is the third Eagle to be ranked 30th in his respective weight class. At 184 pounds, Grimes took fourth at the Southeast Open and eighth at the Wolfpack Open.

Jeric Kasunic (27) was the final Eagle to be represented on the list at 197 pounds. He finished third at the Wilkes Open and fifth at the Wolfpack Open. Kasunic went undefeated in the three matches at the AU Duals defeating North Carolina's Daniel Chaid (32).
