Eagles Fall to No. 8 Lehigh

WASHINGTON – American University senior Esteban Gomez-Rivera earned a last-second 7-6 win over Joe Lobeck at 133 pounds, but No. 8 Lehigh won the final eight bouts to earn a 31-3 victory in a dual match between Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association battle Saturday at Bender Arena.

The Eagles fell to 3-4 on the season and 0-3 in league matches, while the Mountain Hawks improved to 7-1 and 5-0 after a weekend road sweep over Navy and AU.

Gomez-Rivera trailed 3-0 early in the third period before getting a takedown. Lobeck escaped before another takedown-escape combination had the AU senior trailing 6-4. Lobeck was hit with a penalty point for a late stall and Gomez-Rivera scored his third takedown of the period to earn the win.

In an early battle between nationally ranked opponents, eighth-ranked Darian Cruz beat AU's Josh Terao, 9-5, in the 125-pound match.

Terao, ranked 16th by Intermat but as high as 10th by other rating services, erased a 4-0 deficit with a four-point nearfall early in the second period. Cruz got a reversal to regain the lead in the period. Cruz got the first takedown of the final period and went on for the win.

AU's Jason Grimes was within 3-2 in the final period with Kyle Gentile at 184, but the Mountain Hawk freshman had a takedown down the stretch to earn a 5-3 win.

A third-period takedown also lifted Lehigh heavyweight Christian Colucci to a late edge and a 6-4 win over Brett Dempsey.
