EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Josh Terao will lead a small group of American University wrestlers into the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Thursday and Friday, hosted by Northwestern University.
The Eagles are expected to send Terao (125 pounds), sophomore Jack Mutchnik (141), sophomore Michael Sprague (149), senior Jason Grimes (184) and junior Brett Dempsey (heavyweight) to the two-day event, which includes 39 schools. There are 16 ranked teams, including 10 among the top 20 in the nation by Flowrestling.org.
Terao, who is 10-2 this season, has been mentioned among the top competitors at 125, as he is ranked nationally by all the major services, including 15th by Intermat.com. Dempsey is 17th nationally at heavyweight by Wrestling Insider Newsletter.
Mutchnik leads AU in wins with 15 (15-5), with Sprague just behind at 14-4. Grimes has already pinned seven opponents and is 11-6.
Wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, with a second session at 8 p.m. Friday's action begins at 1 p.m. EST, with the finals, 3rd-place and 5th-place matches shown live on the Big Ten Network starting at 8 p.m. Eastern.
American returns home on Friday, Jan. 6 to host the AU Duals in Bender Arena. Wyoming, Army West Point and North Carolina will compete, starting at 3 p.m. Tickets for AU home wrestling matches are always available online at www.aueagles.com/tickets.
