Navy Tops Eagles in EIWA Dual

Navy Tops Eagles in EIWA Dual

BALTIMOREJason Grimes earned his team-best seventh fall of the season and Josh Terao ran his record to 10-2, but Navy won six of 10 matches Friday to earn a 24-17 victory over American in an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association dual match held at Mount St. Joseph HS.

The Eagles' dual-meet record dropped to 2-1, while the Midshipmen improved to 5-0.

Grimes, a junior wrestling at 184 pounds, needed just 1:24 to pin Ryan Harman of Navy. He now has seven falls among his 11 victories, including six in the first period.

Terao, a redshirt sophomore, started the Eagles on the right path with an 18-0 technical fall over Brant Leadbeter in the 125-pound bout. The 5-0 team lead held up until Navy won the next two matchups, including a pin by Nicholas Gil at 141.

AU's Michael Sprague won the 149-pound bout, 6-5, to pull the Eagles within 9-8, but Navy won the next three matches to take a 21-8 advantage.

Brett Dempsey picked up the other Eagle win in the heavyweight match, beating Ethan Stanley, 7-1.

"Overall we performed well tonight," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "We had a few redshirts step into the starting lineup and give big efforts against a good Navy squad.

"Wins from Jason Grimes and Josh Terao gave us good momentum and they showed great leadership in those wins. Brett Dempsey continues to show good progress at heavyweight.

"Now its time to focus on our finals and prepare for the Wilkes Open and Midlands. The holidays can be a great time to develop if we commit to putting in the work."

American will be off until Dec. 22 when some of its wrestlers participate in the Wilkes Open. Others will head to the Midlands Invitational on Dec. 29 and 30.

The Eagles return home on Friday, Jan. 6 when they host the AU Duals. American will wrestle Wyoming, Army West Point and North Carolina, beginning at 3 p.m. Tickets for all AU wrestling matches are available online at www.aueagles.com/tickets.
