BALTIMORE - A pair of local wrestling rivals square off Friday when American faces Navy in a dual match between Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association opponents. The match will be at Mount St. Joseph HS in Baltimore, beginning at 5 p.m.
The school is located at 4403 Frederick Ave. in Baltimore.
The Eagles come into the match with a 2-0 record in duals, having beaten both Campbell and Clarion last month. The Midshipmen post a 4-0 mark in duals, with both their Blue and Gold squads having beaten both Johns Hopkins and Delaware Valley in the early season.
AU and Navy each sent teams to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last weekend, with each school moving two wrestlers to second-day action. Eagle sophomore Jack Mutchnik (15-5) placed eighth at 141 pounds and the Eagles placed 23rd in the team standings, ahead of Navy's 26th-place finish.
Sophomore 125-pounder Josh Terao (9-2) also made it through the first day in Vegas.
The Eagles' lineup is also expected to include 197-pound junior Jeric Kasunic, who had 10 points in the dual wins over Campbell and Clarion, and senior 184-pounder Jason Grimes, who lewads AU with six falls this season, including four in the first period.
Navy's two wrestlers who advanced to the second day in Las Vegas were juniors Drew Daniels (6-4 at 165) and Jadaen Bernstein (13-3 at 174). Bernstein leads the Midshipmen starters in victories this season.
Navy won, 21-17, last season in Bender Arena.
Following the Navy match, American will be off for finals and the holidays. The Eagles will return to competition on Dec. 29 and 30 at the Midlands Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University.
American's next home action will be on Friday, Jan. 6 when the Eagles host Wyoming, Army West Point and North Carolina in the AU Duals beginning at 3 p.m. Tickets to all AU home wrestling matches are available online at www.aueagles.com/tickets.
