AU Hopes to Continue Hot Start in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. – American University hopes to continue its strong start to the 2016-17 wrestling season on Sunday when it travels to NC State for the Wolfpack Open.

The Eagles had eight place-winners at the Southern Open to start the year, then swept a double-dual match last Sunday against Campbell and Clarion.

AU's start has already been noted on the national scene, as the Eagles got two points in the most recent rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Five wrestlers – sophomore Josh Terao (125), senior Esteban Gomez-Rivera (133), sophomore Michael Sprague (149), senior Jason Grimes (184) and junior Jeric Kasunic (197) – earned a pair of individual wins at last Sunday's duals.

Kasunic's 10 points in the dual matches earned him the GEICO – AU Student-Athlete of the Week honor for last week.

The Eagles will take a full complement of wrestlers to Raleigh, hoping to continue to gain momentum, confidence and experience into the end of November.

AU's next home matches are on Jan. 6, 2017 when the Eagles host the AU Duals. The Eagles will face Wyoming, Army West Point and North Carolina, starting that day at 3 p.m.
