AU Opens Home Mat Season on Sunday

WASHINGTON – American University will play host to Campbell and Clarion on Sunday in a wrestling meet that marks the opening of the home season for the Eagles.

AU will face Campbell at noon before playing host to Clarion at 2 p.m. The Camels and Golden Eagles wrestle in a dual meet in Bender Arena at 10 a.m.

American had a number of strong showings last Sunday in its season-opener at the Southeast Open.

Senior Esteban Gomez-Rivera earned second place in the 133-pound Open Division, while 184-pounder Jason Grimes finished fourth. Heavyweight Brett Dempsey and 149-pounder Tom Page each lost in the consolation semifinals, just one match away from wrestling for fifth.

Placing for the Eagles in the Freshman/Sophomore Division were Michael Eckhart (2nd at 165), Kizhan Clarke (3rd at 141), Jake Scanlan (4th at 285), Jack Mutchnik (5th at 141) and Gage Curry (5th at 125).

A pair of returning veterans with strong records are expected to make their first appearance for AU on Sunday. Redshirt sophomore Josh Terao is the expected starter at 125, with junior Jeric Kasunic in the probable lineup at 197.

Campbell is 2-1 early this season after winning duals last weekend at West Virginia (29-17) and against Ohio University (23-15), but losing to Pittsburgh (21-13).

Clarion opened its season last weekend by hosting the Clarion Open.
