ROANOKE, Va. – Esteban Gomez-Rivera placed second at 133 pounds in the Open Division and Michael Sprague won the 149-pound bracket in the Freshman/Sophomore Division to lead American University wrestlers Sunday at the Southeast Open.
The event opened the 2016-17 season for the collegiate teams wrestling in the event.
Jason Grimes earned fourth place in the Open 184-pound competition, earning two wins by fall. Tom Page (4-2 at 149) and Brett Dempsey (3-2 at 285) lost just one bout short of wrestling for fifth place in their Open Division brackets.
Placing for the Eagles in the Freshman/Sophomore Division were Michael Eckhart (2nd at 165), Kizhan Clarke (3rd at 141), Jake Scanlan (4th at 285), Jack Mutchnik (5th at 141) and Gage Curry (5th at 125).
"Today was a very good start to the season," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "As a group we competed very well. Our young freshmen and sophomores are making good progress in fundamental areas.
"The upperclassmen showed equal progress and their biggest steps forward came from good mat wrestling where we accumulated a lot of near-fall and riding-time points. That's an area that we've put considerable work in since last season, and they are seeing success because of it.
"We should be happy with our preparation and success, but there's room for improvement next weekend. We will be ready to defend our home gym."
Gomez-Rivera won his first four matches, including an 8-2 win in the semis against Austin Harry of Army West Point. He lost 7-2 in the final to third-seeded Tyler Goodwin of Maryland.
Sprague beat the second seed in the Freshman/Sophomore 149-pound class, then won three more matches before getting a 5-2 decision in the final over top-seeded Jarrett Degen of Virginia Tech.
American faces its home opener on Sunday, Nov. 13 when it plays host to Campbell at noon and Clarion at 2 p.m. Ticket information for AU home wrestling matches is available at www.aueagles.com/tickets.
