INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA has announced the 49 at-large selections for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. American University seniors David Terao (125) and Mitchell Wightman (165) have both been chosen as at-large selections.
The at-large selections join the 281 student-athletes that qualified automatically through their conference championships over the past two weekends. The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking, qualifying event placement, and number of matches contested at the weight class.
Terao, currently ranked 19th by InterMat at 125 pounds, owns a 25-5 record on the season after placing fifth at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships over the weekend. Terao, now a four-time NCAA qualifier, owns the career wins record at AU with 126 career victories.
Meanwhile, Wightman also placed fifth at the EIWA Championships and carries a 22-15 record on the season. Wightman was an NCAA qualifier in 2014 as a member of the wrestling team at Boston University.
The Eagles will send a total of three wrestlers to this year's NCAA Championships. Senior captain John Boyle earned an automatic bid to the tournament with his runner-up finish at 157 pounds at the EIWA Championships.
Complete brackets for the tournament will be released on Wednesday.
