AU Wrestlers Edge Old Dominion, 19-18

NORFOLK, Va. – In its closest dual of the season, the American University wrestling team held on for a 19-18 non-conference victory against Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Jeric Kasunic (197) and senior David Terao (125) each recorded falls to lead the Eagles' team effort, as American moved to 5-8 overall on the season.

The dual began at 184 pounds, as junior Jason Grimes took on 11th-ranked Jack Dechow. Despite a hard-fought battle from Grimes, Dechow came away with a 6-4 decision to give ODU the early lead.

At 197 pounds, Kasunic put American on top after pinning his opponent in 1:31. It was the seventh fall of the year for Kasunic, who was wrestling in just his second match back from an injury. Meanwhile, the Monarchs tied things back up by winning a close 4-3 decision in the heavyweight match.

Terao, ranked 14th in the nation at 125 pounds, helped the Eagles regain their advantage by recording his fastest fall of the season, pinning Brandon Jeske in just 30 seconds. While ODU won a decision at 133 pounds, American remained in the lead following an 8-3 win by redshirt senior Tyler Scotton at 141.

A win by eighth-ranked Alexander Richardson at 149 pounds helped the Monarchs cut AU's lead to 15-12. However, 14th-ranked senior John Boyle turned in a strong performance at 157 pounds for the Eagles, scoring an 11-3 major decision to put American up by seven.

Although the Eagles lost the last two bouts of the match in overtime, the team had already scored enough bonus points in the dual to secure the victory.

"Today's win was a great team effort," said American head coach Teague Moore. "David's fall was very impressive and Jeric is back to his winning ways. All 10 wrestlers provided the effort needed to pull out the victory."

American returns to action on Friday, Feb. 19, for its final home dual of the season, as it hosts Ohio in a 7 p.m. contest. Prior to the match, the Eagles will honor the members of the Class of 2016, who will make their final appearance in Bender Arena.
