Eagles Fall to Sixth-Ranked Lehigh, 32-8

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Facing off against sixth-ranked conference foe Lehigh, the American University wrestling dropped a 32-8 decision to the Mountain Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Eagles drop to 4-7 on the season and 1-5 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in the EIWA.

"This was a tough environment to compete in with the fans right on top of you," said American head coach Teague Moore. "It is great preparation for the post season."

The first bout of the afternoon featured a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers, as eighth-ranked senior David Terao took the mat against Lehigh's 14th-ranked Darian Cruz. Despite a tough battle, Terao came up short, dropping an 11-8 decision for his first dual loss of the season.

The Mountain Hawks increased their lead in the team scoring to 9-0 after an AU forfeit at 133 pounds. At 141 pounds, redshirt senior Tyler Scotton took 18th-ranked Randy Cruz to overtime, but dropped a 7-3 decision in sudden victory, and Lehigh pushed its advantage to 16-0 with a major decision at 149 pounds.

American picked up its first win of the dual at 157 pounds, as 13th-ranked senior John Boyle used a strong third period to pick up a 4-2 decision to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman turned in a strong performance at 165 pounds for American, rolling to a 20-2 technical fall.

Unfortunately, it would be the last win of the afternoon for the Eagles, as Lehigh posted four straight victories to close out the dual.

"John and Mitch came away with victories today, but we fought hard in many of the bouts," said Moore.  "John continues to learn and make changes, as does Mitch, and that's great to see in your seniors.

"David and Tyler both lose close battles, but just one move in each of their matches was the difference between a loss and a win. They are not discouraged, but rather motivated from these matches."

American is back at home next Saturday, Feb. 13, when it hosts EIWA foe Bucknell at 11 a.m.
