AU Wrestling Comes Up Short at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – Despite winning five of 10 bouts, the American University wrestling team dropped a 22-17 decision to EIWA foe Binghamton on Friday evening.

In the first bout of the night, senior captain David Terao, ranked eighth in the nation at 125 pounds, improved to 9-0 in dual action this season, winning a 9-1 major decision to give AU an early lead.

The Eagles were dealt a blow at 133 pounds, when redshirt junior Esteban Gomez-Rivera was forced to default with an injury less than 15 seconds into the bout, giving Binghamton six team points.

American regained the lead after a 9-5 decision by redshirt senior Tyler Scotton at 141 pounds, but the Bearcats won a 1-0 decision at 149 pounds to pull back ahead.

At 157 pounds, 13th-ranked senior captain John Boyle used a flurry of scoring in the third period to earn an 11-3 major decision, giving American an 11-9 lead. The Eagles pushed ahead to a 14-9 advantage after redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman earned a 6-3 decision at 165 pounds.

Binghamton regained the lead, taking a 15-14 advantage after earning a stalling disqualification against the Eagles at 174 pounds. The Bearcats extended their lead with wins in the next two bouts, scoring a decision at 184 and a major decision at 197.

Meanwhile, American scored the final win of the night, as freshman heavyweight Jake Scanlan scored an escape and a takedown in tiebreakers to earn a 4-2 decision.

"We fought hard tonight," said American head coach Teague Moore. "Our guys that won battled hard and were able to win their bouts because they dug deep, not only to win but to keep scoring.

"We never backed down and we never avoided wrestling."

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow afternoon, facing a tough challenge as they visit sixth-ranked EIWA foe Lehigh at 3:00.
