INDIANAPOLIS – Five American University wrestlers appear in the first coaches' panel rankings for the 2015-16 season, released Thursday by the NCAA.
Senior captain David Terao, a three-time NCAA qualifier for the Eagles, leads the way for AU, ranked eighth at 125 pounds. He is joined in the top 10 by fellow captain John Boyle, a 2015 NCAA qualifier, who is rated ninth at 157 pounds.
Redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman, who qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championships while wrestling at Boston University, is currently ranked 24th at 165 pounds.
The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which are being held March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated a starter at a respective weight class. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
