WASHINGTON – Dropping three of the last four bouts, the American University wrestling team fell to EIWA foe Navy, 21-17, on Saturday evening at Bender Arena.
With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, while the Midshipmen improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the EIWA.
American started out strong, as senior captain David Terao, ranked eighth in the nation at 125 pounds, rolled to an 18-6 major decision. Redshirt junior Esteban Gomez-Rivera added another win for the Eagles at 133 pounds, holding on for an 8-6 decision.
Navy won a pair of decisions in the next two bouts to cut AU's lead to 7-6 in the team scoring, but the Eagles got back in the win column with a 10-2 major decision by 10th-ranked senior captain John Boyle at 157 pounds.
At 165 pounds, redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman came back from a 3-1 deficit late in the third period, scoring an escape and a takedown in the final 45 seconds to earn a 4-3 decision.
The Mids put their first nationally ranked wrestler—No. 18 Jadaen Bernstein—on the mat at 174 pounds. Despite a tough battle by AU's Jason Grimes, Bernstein won a 7-3 decision to cut American's lead to 14-12.
Navy took the lead in the team scoring when 15th-ranked Mathew Miller recorded a first-period fall at 184 pounds and cemented the team victory with another fall at 197 pounds.
Although the dual outcome had already been determined, American captured the final bout of the night, as freshman heavyweight Jake Scanlan earned a 5-2 decision.
"We did not look good tonight," said American head coach Teague Moore. "It's strange, because we had a really good week of training. Everybody looked really solid, everyone was giving 100 percent effort every day. Then we came out tonight, and a lot of our guys looked extremely tired in the first period."
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow at noon, when they host Drexel in an EIWA dual.
"Tomorrow we're favored on paper, but we have to come out and show it on the mat," said Moore. "I think we'll come out with a different attitude and a different fire than we came out with this evening, but we're going to have to come out and take that win tomorrow."
