PITTSBURGH – The American University wrestling team went 2-1 at the Pitt Duals on Saturday, defeating Brown (21-13) and Bloomsburg (36-9) before falling to third-ranked NC State (28-6).
Against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) foe Brown, American captured six of 10 bouts to earn the victory. The Eagles got out to a 9-0 lead in the team scoring with decisions by senior David Terao, redshirt junior Esteban Gomez-Rivera and redshirt senior Tyler Scotton before the Bears got on the board with a decision at 149 pounds.
After 10th-ranked senior John Boyle earned a decision at 157 pounds to give American a 12-3 advantage, Brown came back with wins in the next three bouts, scoring a pair of decisions and a major decision to take a 13-12 lead. However, sophomore Jeric Kasunic recorded a fall at 197 to put the Eagles back on top and freshman Jake Scanlan added a decision in the heavyweight match to secure AU's win.
The Eagles won seven of nine contested bouts in its dual versus Bloomsburg to roll to the 36-9 victory. Terao, ranked ninth in the nation at 125 pounds, got things started for American with a fall in just 42 seconds, while Gomez-Rivera scored a decision at 133 pounds. The Huskies forfeited their match at 141 pounds, but earned their first points at 149 pounds, winning by injury default.
Boyle put American back on the board with a major decision, while redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman rolled to a 15-0 technical fall to give the Eagles a 25-6 lead in the team scoring. A decision by junior Jason Grimes at 174 clinched the dual victory for American, but Bloomsburg picked up a decision at 184 pounds to get back on the scoreboard. The Eagles then closed out the duals with two more wins, a fall by Kasunic and a decision by Scanlan.
American finished the day with a dual against NC State, ranked third in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. Terao recorded his third victory of the day, scoring a 16-9 decision to give the Eagles an early lead. However, with three top-10 wrestlers in the next five weight classes, the Wolfpack scored five straight decisions to go up 15-3.
Grimes ended NCSU's run, earning a 3-2 decision to put American back on the board, but the Wolfpack earned bonus-point victories in the last three bouts with a tech fall and a pair of major decisions.
"In the first two dual meets today, we performed well as a group," said American head coach Teague Moore. "We executed our offense and won the small battles.
"The NC State dual did not go as we planned. Although we wrestled many close battles, we have the ability to have our hands raised in more of those matches.
"They are an extremely good team—one of the top teams in the country—and we must believe that we can beat them."
The Eagles are back in action next weekend with a pair of home EIWA duals, hosting Navy on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m., before facing Drexel on Sunday, Jan. 17, at noon.
