WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 9, when it competes in the Pitt Duals, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh. The Eagles will open the day against EIWA foe Brown, before taking on Bloomsburg and third-ranked NC State.
The Eagles enter the weekend with a 2-0 dual record with wins over Campbell and Davidson. Last week, American competed at the Midlands Championships, finishing with two placewinners. Redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman led the way with a fourth-place showing at 165 pounds, while senior captain John Boyle placed sixth at 157 pounds.
Several other American wrestlers competed at the Franklin & Marshall Open, finishing with six placewinners. Sophomore Josh Terao (133) and junior Brett Dempsey (197), wrestling unattached, each won their respective weight classes to lead the Eagles.
AU currently has three wrestlers listed in the latest InterMat rankings, led by senior captain David Terao, who is rated ninth at 125 pounds. Boyle is ranked 10th, while sophomore Jeric Kasunic is ranked 18th at 197 pounds.
Additionally, Wightman entered a pair of national polls after his performance at the Midlands Championships. He is currently listed at 11th by WIN Magazine and 19th by Amateur Wrestling News.
Brown opens its dual slate this weekend after competing in tournaments for the first two months of the season. The Bears competed at the Franklin & Marshall Open last week, finishing with five placewinners. Leading the way for Brown was Justin Staudenmayer, who took first place at 157 pounds, while Josh Durso-Finley placed second at 197 pounds.
For the season, Staudenmayer paces the Bears with 13 wins, while Christian LaBrie has registered 12 victories.
Bloomsburg has posted a 1-8 dual record on the season. The Huskies split a pair of duals last weekend, defeating VMI (20-18) and falling to Hofstra (27-16).
Dominic Carfagno has posted a team-leading 17 wins at 197 pounds, while 133-pounder Andy Schutz has recorded 14 wins and a 6-3 mark in dual action.
NC State, ranked third in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, has rolled to an 12-0 dual record to begin the season. The Wolfpack earned a 34-9 victory over ACC rival Duke on Wednesday.
Six NC State wrestlers are listed in the latest InterMat individual poll, led by top-ranked heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski. Kevin Jack, rated third at 141, and Max Rohskopf, ranked fourth at 165, join Gwiazdowski in the top five, while Thomas Gantt is ranked sixth at 157 pounds.
Also ranked in the national polls for the Wolfpack are Pete Renda, rated 16th at 184 pounds, and Michael Boykin, ranked 17th at 197.
