WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team concludes the 2015 calendar year at the 53rd-annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, hosted Dec. 29-30 by Northwestern University.
Tuesday's first session begins at 9:30 a.m. (CT), with the second session scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Wednesday's action begins at noon with finals scheduled for 8 p.m.
The Eagles make their appearance at the Midlands Championships, one of the premier NCAA wrestling events, for the first time since 2011. Twelve AU wrestlers have finished as placewinners a total of 18 times, including three champions.
The Eagles are coming off a 41-10 dual victory over Davidson last week. American won eight of nine contested bouts, picking up bonus points in all eight wins. Redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman (165), sophomore Jeric Kasunic (197) and freshman Jake Scanlan (HWT) each scored falls to lead AU, while redshirt senior Tyler Scotton (141) added a technical fall.
Three AU wrestlers enter this week's tournament in the national rankings, led by senior David Terao, who is rated ninth by InterMat at 125 pounds with a 10-2 overall record. Senior captain John Boyle is rated 11th at 157 pounds with an 11-2 mark, while Kasunic is ranked 19th with a 10-3 ledger and a team-best four falls.
