LAS VEGAS – American University will be one of 40 teams participating on Friday and Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitational.
The tournament includes many of the top teams and individuals in the U.S., and will give the Eagles an early season look at high-level national competition.
"This is a mini-nationals," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "We need this type of event to see top-ranked athletes early.
"We also like putting ourselves through the multiple day weigh-ins, along with the test of travel, new environment and facing Midwest and West Coast teams."
Two veteran Eagles who earned trips to the 2015 NCAA Nationals will be among the wrestlers to watch this weekend.
David Terao is pre-seeded third at 125 pounds. Moore said that 13 of the top-20 wrestlers in that weight class are entered in the Cliff Keen tournament. Terao comes in with a 6-0 record this season after setting the AU single-season record for victories a year ago.
John Boyle, who reached the NCAAs at 157 pounds last year, is seeded seventh prior to this tournament. Boyle is 5-1 so far this year.
Terao and Esteban Gomez-Rivera (6-0 at 133) are coming off individual titles at the N.C. State Wolfpack Open two weeks ago. Jeric Kasunic (4-1 at 197) and Boyle were second at the Wolfpack.
Tyler Scotton leads the Eagles in victories so far this year with an 8-4 mark at 141, while Tom Page is 7-4 at 149. Jason Grimes is 3-2 for the Eagles at 174.
The tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m. PST and continues through the day on Saturday.
