WASHINGTON – The American University wrestling team officially begins the 2015-16 season this Saturday, as it visits Campbell for a non-conference dual at noon.
The Eagles return every letterwinner from last season's squad that posted an 8-12 record in dual competition. Among the leaders for this year's team are returning NCAA qualifiers David Terao and John Boyle. The seniors both enter this weekend's dual in the national rankings, with Terao rated eighth at 125 pounds and Boyle ranked 17th at 157 pounds.
Among the top newcomers for American this season are redshirt seniors Tyler Scotton (141) and Mitchell Wightman (165). Both were 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifiers at Boston University before the Terriers' program was dropped.
True freshman Jake Scanlan, who spent a year at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., is also expected to enter the Eagles' starting lineup at the heavyweight position.
While the Eagles haven't kicked off their official schedule yet, several AU wrestlers have already seen action early in the season.
Junior Jason Grimes competed in a featured match at the 50th-annual NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 1, while others took part in open competition at the Hokie Open last weekend. Among the standouts there were Scanlan, who placed second at heavyweight in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, and senior Michael Dahlstrom, who took fourth place at 149 pounds in the Open Division.
Campbell enters this weekend with an 0-4 dual record. The Camels fell to West Virginia (26-14), Drexel (21-15) and Arizona State (29-6) at the Mountaineer Quads last weekend.
Leading Campbell early in the season is redshirt junior Nathan Kraisser, who is currently ranked 17th in the nation at 133 pounds with a 4-0 record.
