COLUMBIA, Mo. – Junior captain John Boyle scored an upset at 157 pounds, but the American University wrestling team was unable to get past second-ranked Missouri on Sunday, dropping a 34-3 decision to the Tigers in the regional round of the 2015 NWCA National Duals.
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 7-11 overall on the season, while the Tigers remained undefeated with a perfect 21-0 dual mark.
Missouri, which featured seven nationally ranked wrestlers in its lineup on Sunday, won decisions in each of the first four bouts to take a 12-0 lead in the team scoring.
Boyle put American on the scoreboard after coming through with a 3-2 decision over ninth-ranked Joey Lavallee. Boyle, rated 23rd at 157 pounds in the latest coaches' panel rankings, scored the lone takedown of the bout to improve to 31-7 on the year. The win was Boyle's third victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
"John Boyle earned another great win," said American head coach Teague Moore. "He wrestled his match and took advantage of a great opportunity. His progress over the season has been impressive."
Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to score another victory, as the Tigers dominated the final five matches of the dual.
"Wrestling the second-ranked team in their home gym can be tough, but we battled in the matches that we could," said Moore. "I'm glad that our young team got this experience."
The Eagles close out their dual slate next weekend with a pair of home matches, hosting George Mason and Northwestern on Saturday, Feb. 21.
