American Drops 27-9 Decision to No. 23 Bucknell

WASHINGTON – Picking up just three victories, the American University wrestling team dropped a 27-9 contest to 23rd-ranked EIWA foe Bucknell on Saturday evening in Bender Arena.

The Eagles fell to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in the EIWA, while the Bison improved to 13-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

Bucknell started the match with a pair of close decisions at 174 and 184 pounds and increased its lead with a fall at 197 pounds and a major decision at heavyweight.

The Eagles got on the board with a decision at 125 pounds, as 16th-ranked junior David Terao earned a hard-fought 8-4 victory over Paul Petrov. Younger brother Josh Terao followed with a win at 133 pounds, holding on for a 4-2 decision over Grim Gonzalez.

"I knew that I had to put the offense on [Petrov] early and come up big with those points," said David Terao. "Once I did that, I kind of calmed down, and let myself wrestle out there. That's what I need to do in pretty much every match, but even more so in a tough match."

The Bison followed with a decision and a major decision at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, to secure the team victory. Meanwhile, junior captain John Boyle picked up another decision for the Eagles at 157 pounds before Bucknell closed out the match with a major decision.

"We knew in all 10 bouts we had tough matches in front of us," said American head coach Teague Moore. "David and Josh came through again and got the wins started for us. I liked seeing where David was at—he's had trouble with that opponent before, but he managed the match very well. Josh came out and wrestled a very strategic, very smart match and got it done.

"John Boyle, our captain, wrestled a very good first two periods. In the third period, he got ridden out and we'll want to change that for EIWAs, but for those three guys, I feel like it was a good night. There were a couple others that wrestled good matches, but we need more and this young group needs to continue to get better on the little things."

The Eagles return to action tomorrow for a 2 p.m. dual versus EIWA foe Binghamton.
