WASHINGTON – Despite getting out to an early lead, the American University wrestling team was unable to get the upset victory over No. 20 Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 26-15 decision to the Monarchs.
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 5-4 overall on the season, while the Monarchs improved to 7-3 on the year.
ODU took an early lead with a major decision in the heavyweight bout, but American got on the scoreboard with a win at 125 pounds in a match-up of ranked opponents. Junior David Terao, listed 16th in the latest InterMat rankings, faced off against No. 20 Brandon Jeske, earning a 2-0 decision.
Freshman Josh Terao put the Eagles ahead in the team scoring with a decisive win at 133 pounds, pinning Michael Hayes in a time of 1:49. Meanwhile, freshman Michael Sprague came through for AU at 141 pounds, earning a 3-1 decision in sudden victory.
The Monarchs scored another win at 149 pounds, with 14th-ranked Lenny Richardson posting an 8-4 decision. However, junior team captain John Boyle extended American's advantage to 15-7, winning a 4-0 decision at 157 pounds.
Unfortunately, Old Dominion swept the last four bouts of the dual, including a pair of falls, to come back for the team victory.
"I'm happy with the fight that we brought today," said Moore. "We needed a good turnaround from Friday's match at Navy, and I thought we got that out of a lot of the guys on the team."
The Eagles are back in action next Sunday, Jan. 25, when they head to New York, N.Y., for a pair of duals against Columbia and Hofstra.
