RALEIGH, N.C. – The American University wrestling team wrapped up a full day of competition at the Wolfpack Duals, earning victories over UNC Pembroke (25-15) and Lindsey Wilson (31-6), while falling to host North Carolina State (22-13).
"I was very happy for David, Josh, John and Jason, who all went undefeated today," said American head coach Teague Moore. "They all executed well and found their best positions."
Against UNC Pembroke, the Eagles picked up wins in six of 10 matches, beginning with a fall by ninth-ranked David Terao at 125 pounds. Younger brother Josh Terao added a sudden victory decision at 133 pounds, but UNCP wins at 141 and 149 pounds tied the match at 9-9.
American regained the lead with a technical fall by Boyle at 157 pounds, while the Eagles were able to secure the victory with major decisions from Kasunic (174) and Brett Dempsey (197) and a decision by Grimes (184).
In their second dual of the day, the Eagles faced off against the host Wolfpack, who received votes in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll. Again, the Terao brothers gave American an early lead in the team scoring, with David earning a major decision and Josh adding a decision.
NC State scored a pair of decisions to cut AU's lead to one, but Boyle earned a 12-5 decision to keep the Eagles on top. However, the Wolfpack won four of the last five bouts, with Grimes scoring the only AU victory down the stretch.
The Eagles closed out the day with a big win against Lindsey Wilson, winning all nine contested bouts. AU's only loss of the match came in a forfeit at 157 pounds.
Kasunic was the big point scorer against the Blue Raiders, earning a technical fall. David and Josh Terao each scored major decisions, while Tom Page (141), Michael Dahlstrom (149), Brad Mutchnik (165), Grimes, Dempsey and Scot Augustine (HWT) all earned decisions.
"Although we started off slow today against UNC Pembroke, we competed well against NC State and Lindsey Wilson," said Moore. "The final dual of the day had everyone executing well. It was a good day to see character come through. This was a good test in preparation for the Las Vegas Invitational."
The Eagles will have a week off before heading to the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, being held Dec. 5-6.
