Eagles Down Campbell, 45-6, in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – In its first dual of the season, the American University wrestling team picked up a 45-6 victory over Campbell University Saturday afternoon at Bender Arena.

The Eagles (1-0) entered the match with a significant advantage, as Campbell brought just five wrestlers to compete. American got out to a 24-0 lead in the team scoring with forfeits by the Camels at 125, 133, 141 and 149 pounds.

The action started at 157 pounds, with AU team captain John Boyle taking on Campbell's Daniel Luty. Boyle registered six total takedowns, including three in the final period alone, to earn a 17-5 major decision.

At 165 pounds, Campbell got on the board, winning a 3-1 sudden victory decision. However, the Eagles rebounded with a big win at 174 pounds, as freshman Jeric Kasunic registered his fourth fall of the season, pinning his opponent in a time of 4:06.

The Camels (0-2) picked up another close decision at 184 pounds, winning 5-3. Meanwhile, sophomore Brett Dempsey scored a dominant victory for the Eagles at 197 pounds. Dempsey held an 11-3 advantage after two periods, but scored seven takedowns in the third period, adding a three-point near fall as time expired, to register a 29-10 technical fall.

A Campbell forfeit in the heavyweight bout accounted for the final 45-6 team score.

"With the athletes that had the chance to compete today, the key things were for us to do some of the things we've been practicing on a regular basis," said American head coach Teague Moore. "Two of the matches, we fell short and lost, but they are definitely coachable moments. I think we can take some things out of those matches, get back into the practice room and work on the things that we need to.

"We have a young team, we have no seniors in our lineup. These guys will be together for the next two years, so it's good that we get started this way. We had a great weekend last weekend, so this kind of keeps the ball rolling."

The Eagles return to action next Sunday, Nov. 23, when they head to Raleigh, N.C., for the NC State Duals.
