Video Highlights: Wrestling Drops First Home Dual of Season to Navy, 18-17

The American University wrestling team won five weight classes in its home opener on Friday against Navy but fell just short of a victory as the Midshipmen edged the Eagles, 18-17. #4 Mike Cannon scored a technical fall at 184 lbs. to put American ahead 11-6 but a major decision at heavyweight proved to be the difference in the meet.

Action began at 149 lbs. where #12 Kyle Borshoff picked up a 4-1 decision over Glenn Shober to give American a 3-0 lead. #5 Steve Fittery followed Borshoff at 157 lbs. with a 9-3 decision of his own over eighth-ranked Bryce Saddoris, moving the score to 6-0. Back-to-back decisions won by the Midshipmen at 165 lbs. and 174 lbs. evened the meet at six.

Cannon gave the Eagles an 11-6 advantage with an impressive 16-0 tech-fall at 184 lbs. Navy bounced right back though with a tech-fall at 197 lbs. and a major decision at heavyweight to take its first lead of the evening, 15-11.

#20 Jasen Borshoff moved the Eagles to within one, 15-14, as he scored a 4-3 decision over Aaron Kalil at 125 lbs. American was unable to overtake Navy though as the Midshipmen took a decision at 133 lbs. to regain a four-point advantage, 18-14. Needing a major decision to tie the score and a tech-fall or fall to win, Jordan Lipp could only come away with a 2-1 decision over Matt Pagan at 141 lbs. to close out the night, giving the meet to Navy, 18-17.

Cannon's victory improves him to 12-1 on the year while Fittery's overall record now stands at 19-1. K. Borshoff is now 11-2 while J. Borshoff is 12-3. Lipp improves to 9-10.

American will return to the mat on Sunday, January 17, at the Indiana Duals in Bloomington, Ind.
