NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The American wrestling team finished at 1-1 on the day today after a tri-meet with Rutgers and Boston College held at Rutgers. American had six individual victories in the 36-20 team win over Boston College, including pins by Aaron Baker at 174 lbs., Kyle Mason at 184 lbs., and Jared Hyman at heavyweight. The Eagles did not fare as well against host Rutgers, as senior Willie Harris came away with the sole win for American, notching a 10-7 decision at 125 lbs. against Andrew Uhrlass of Rutgers. American moves to 3-8 overall this season after today's matches.
Hoffer entered today's meet ranked No. 13 in the nation at 149
lbs. by InterMat after three wins by fall at the East Stroudsburg
quad meet last weekend. Yet Hoffer struggled today in his match
with Greg Austin from Rutgers and fell, 10-9, in his first dual
meet loss of the 2001-02 season. Hoffer also recorded a win by
forfeit against Boston College.
In the win over Boston College, heavyweight Hyman recorded his fifth straight dual meet victory and his third pin of the 2001-02 season. He now has four total pins in his career after taking down Jared McLaughlin (BC) at 1:38. Meanwhile, Mason's pin marked his second on the season as he won by fall at 4:42 into his match against Mark Melanson, while Baker had his first collegiate pin today, taking down Ben Slaughter at 4:46. The Eagles also had three forfeit wins to close out the victory against Boston College.
Meanwhile, against Rutgers, Harris's win by decision marked his ninth win on the year and his sixth dual meet victory. Harris remains undefeated in dual meets this year.
The Eagles return home Wednesday, Jan. 23, to face Howard in Bender Arena starting at 7 p.m.
