Sal Caccavale Picked in MLS Supplemental Draft by New York Red Bulls

WASHINGTON - Former American University men's soccer player Sal Caccavale has been selected by the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer on Thursday.

Caccavale, a native of West Islip, N.Y., was the sixth pick of the second round of the supplemental draft.

In November, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America picked Caccavale for the Second-Team All-Mid-Atlantic squad. Caccavale was also named First Team All-Patriot League for the third straight time after the 2006 season. Caccavale was selected as the Brine Offensive Player of the Week and named to the Soccer America Team of the Week during season for his performance in the D.C. College Cup. In the Patriot League Caccavale tied for first in game-winning goals and ranked second in shots per game. Caccavale finished the season leading the Eagles in points and goals. In addition, Caccavale finished his AU career as the seventh-leading scorer in school history.

Caccavale joins former AU great and teammate Shawn Kuykendall on the Red Bulls' roster.

The signing marks the fifth time in the last six years a former American player has been drafted into MLS or signed a professional contract: Bobby Brennan DC United in 2001; Mike Behonick, DC United 2002 (currently with NY Red Bulls); Peter Philipakos AEK Athens 2003; Shawn Kuykendall DC United 2004; and Sal Caccavale NY Red Bulls 2006.
