Men's Soccer Falls Victim to Georgetown Golden Goal in 2-1 Overtime Loss

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The American University men's soccer team scored first on Tuesday at Georgetown, but allowed the equalizer early in the second period and then gave up a Golden Goal in the first overtime period to lose, 2-1, at North Kehoe Field.

In the 40th minute, sophomore forward Jake Van Yahres pressured Hoya defender Len Coleman in the box as the GU sophomore attempted to drop the ball back to his goalkeeper. However, under heavy pressure, Coleman misplayed the ball right to Van Yahres' feet, who one-touched it with pace into the lower right corner of the goal, surprising the GU keeper and giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

However, just six minutes into the second half, Georgetown midfielder Scott Larrabee found himself alone with the ball on the back side of the Eagles' net, the benefactor of a lucky break. Georgetown's Chandler Diggs had sent a slow, rolling crossing pass through the box which looked as if it would be kicked away by an Eagle defender. However, the defender slipped down and the ball rolled all the way over to Larrabee, who fired a right-footed blast into the low right corner to knot the game at one a piece.

That set up a short contest for both teams, as they had 39 minutes left to battle. Despite chances for both teams, the goalkeepers and the defenses held up for the remainder of regulation and the game went into extra time.

Just 4:05 into the sudden victory overtime, Georgetown's Seth C-deBaca took a run down the right sideline which resulted in a cross to the top of the six-yard box just before he reached the endline. Diggs was there and got just enough of his head on the ball to redirect it past the AU defense and tuck it just inside the far post.

With the loss, AU drops to 5-7-2 overall. However, the Eagles remain undefeated in the Patriot League and return to action this Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host Lehigh at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and youths ages 2-18. AU students are free with ID. For fans who cannot make it to Reeves Field for the game, tune in to Eagles All*Access for the call. Click here to sign up for Eagles All*Access.
