Own Goal Gives Men's Soccer 2-1 Win Over Bowling Green

Box Score

WASHINGTON - American University men's soccer's Jon Freimark (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) tallied his first career goal to open the scoring and the Eagles got a break late in the game in a 2-1 win over Bowling Green State University Sunday at Reeves Field.

In a slow first period in which both teams registered just six combined shots, it was the Eagles who capitalized on one of just three opportunities. AU freshman Mike Worden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) threaded a through-pass to classmate Freimark, who corralled the chance and buried it in the 42nd minute.

Although American controlled much of the play in the midfield through the second half, the visiting Falcons were able to equalize the match in the 69th minute when Gavin Dozier tracked down a punt from BGSU keeper Paul Shoemaker in the Eagles' defensive box and beat AU keeper Chris Sedlak (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale) on a one-on-one. However, that was all Sedlak would give up, notching six saves and pushing his personal record to 3-1 on the season. Sedlak has stopped 13 of the last 15 shots on the Eagles' goal.

Both teams tightened their defenses, slowing the game down and making it appear as if it was destined for overtime. However, AU's Philip Purdy (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) in the 84th minute put a low cross through the Falcons' box that hit a defender in the back and deflected into the net. Bowling Green put one more shot on net over the last six minutes, but Sedlak was there to make the save and American managed to run the time down to zero.

Freimark is American's sixth different goal scorer on six goals thus far this season. Meanwhile, the Eagles have assisted four of those markers.

American hits the road for a pair of games, including a trip to the University of South Florida - a homecoming for Sedlak - on Sept. 15. AU returns home on Saturday, Sept. 22 versus Virginia Commonwealth. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Listen to the game LIVE by subscribing to Eagles All*Access. Click here for more information.
