Steve Totten enters his second season as an assistant coach at American University.

Totten most recently was the head coach of Yorktown High School in nearby Arlington, Va., where he spent three seasons. During his time at Yorktown, Totten led the team to two National District Championships and in 2005, led the team to its best-ever finish with an appearance in the Northern Region Semifinals. Totten also gained coaching experience working with the Reston Football Club, the National Cathedral School, the D.C. United Youth Program and with the Bethesda Phoenix.

As a player, Totten was a three-year team captain at the University of Virginia, where he was voted the team's Most Valuable Player after the 1999 and 2000 seasons. In each of Totten's four seasons, his Wahoo squad was ranked in the top-10 in the nation. Totten culminated his collegiate career by being drafted in the third round of the MLS draft by the D.C. United.
