Former All-Patriot League midfielder Patrick Mehlert joins the men's soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant for the 2019 season, as announced by head coach Zach Samol.
"We are excited to add a talented up and coming coach to the staff here at AU," said Samol. Patrick has an excellent eye for the game; he listens well and focuses on the details, which are all great characteristics of a young coach. He's driven and excited to be coaching in the college game. As an AU Soccer alum, he cares deeply about the program and shares the same goals as the rest of our staff. He was a significant contributor and a member of some strong teams during his time here at AU."
Mehlert —Class of 2014 — played in 72 career games with four goals and seven assists for the Eagles. Academically, Mehlert was a three-time PL Honor Roll member.
Mehlert arrives back at American after serving as a head coach with Bethesda Soccer Club for the past five years. Before that, Mehlert coached at the Bullis School and St. John's College High School.
The Bethesda, Maryland product is the son of legendary AU men's soccer head coach Pete Mehlert, who was at the helm from 1972-91. During his time at American, Mehlert coached the 1985 National Championship runner-up team.
Mehlert received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, holds a USSF National "B" Coaches License and various NSCAA certificates/diplomas.
