WORCESTER, Mass. — Nick Dimitrijevic scored a pair of goals to lead the American University men's soccer team over Holy Cross, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
American (3-9-1, 2-3 PL) battled back with a game-tying goal late in the second half to force overtime before Dimitrijevic hit the back of the net in the 97th minute. This is his second multi-goal game of the season. Dimitrijevic now has five goals and to date is third in the Patriot League among goal scorers.
The Eagles were outshot, 20-11, but played tough down the stretch.
Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute on a free kick by Arno Rupp.
American tied the game 10 minutes later on Dimitrijevic's header from Sweezen Kizito and Max Holdsworth. For Kizito, the assist was his first collegiate point.
In the extra period, Rupp had two chances blocked before Dimitrijevic collected the ball and went towards goal for his second game-winner of the year.
John Mino made seven saves for his third win of the season. Henry Sturtz came up with four saves and was dealt the overtime loss.
American returns to Reeves Field next weekend, Oct. 21 for its Alumni Day contests against Lehigh at 2 p.m.
