WASHINGTON — Nicholas Dimitrijevic scored three goals for his first collegiate hat trick on Wednesday afternoon as the American University men's soccer team defeated Navy, 3-2, in overtime at Reeves Field.
American (2-8-1, 1-2-0 PL) dominated play for most of the game and finished with a 21-13 advantage in shots. The Eagles were led in shots by Dimitrijevic, who owned the ball and made the most of every opportunity he had at Navy keeper Mac Burke.
The Eagles struck right after play resumed in the second half with a through ball played by Tim Neumann over to Andreas Djurhuus then to Dimitrijevic for the shot over Burke. This was his first collegiate goal in the 47th minute.
Navy answered back in the 56th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Jarvian Wigfall crossed the ball over to TJ Powers who then one-touched the ball over to Aubrey Jones for the goal.
Five minutes later, Dimitrijevic regained the lead for the Eagles after a loose ball scrum in front of the net. However, the Midshipmen found a way to tie the game for the second time with a goal by Wyatt Millard that was redirected off Vinny Barone in front of the net.
In the 73rd minute, Navy had a chance to take its first lead after keeper John Mino miss played the ball which allowed an empty net opportunity for the Mids but Phillip Gustafson shanked the ball wide from outside the 18-yard box.
American didn't waste much time in overtime as Dimitrijevic scored his third of the game 2:27 into the extra frame off a cross from Neumann.
Mino finished the game three saves while Burke was peppered with 14 shots on goal.
American will host Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m.
