SPOKANE, Wash. — Vinny Barone scored with less than five minutes remaining to give the American University men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Oregon State at the Gonzaga Tournament.
American (1-2) collected its first win of the season and first shutout for John Mino who made eight saves in the win.
American was outshot heavily in the contest, 21-4, but the final shot was only one that counted. Barone's goal came off a corner kick by Tim Neumann that he headed into the back of the net.
Ryan Vincent made two saves for the Beavers who did couldn't capitalize once in the offensive zone. The Beavers had a 10-2 edge in corner kicks and even had three opportunities after the Eagles scored in the 86th minute.
Mino was tested early, making six saves in the first half. He settled down in the second even though the Beavers had 12 shots in the final 45 minutes.
Jerry Zouantcha had another solid performance at up front for the Eagles and took two shots.
American will conclude the Gonzaga Tournament on Sunday evening when they play the host Bulldogs at 7 p.m. (Pacific) / 10 p.m. (Eastern).
