AU heads to George Mason on Sunday

WASHINGTON — The American University men's soccer team will cross the Potomac River for a local match against A-10 foe George Mason on Sunday evening. Both teams opened the 2017 season on Friday with home matches.

American is coming off a 2-0 loss to Georgetown while Mason upset No. 19 Coastal Carolina, 2-1.

Playing in front of a large crowd at Reeves Field, the Eagles found themselves trailing by two at the half. Despite the deficit, American played well in the second half with attempts on goal by Garrett Muzikowski and Vinny Barone. Shaun Quinn and John Mino split time in goal and made four combined saves.

Mason took an early 1-0 lead over the Chanticleers on a goal by Tunde Akinlosotu in the seventh minute. Dirks Hennings scored the game-winner in the 60th on a shot from 15 yards out. Corey Chamber made four saves for the Patriots. 

American will travel west next week for matches against Oregon State and Gonzaga.
