Men’s Soccer Ranked 19th in Nation; Weinreb, Ludwig Earn PL Honors - Watch UCLA Golden Goal

After a victory over No. 1 UCLA this past weekend, American University men's soccer continues to garner recognition. The Eagles are now ranked 19th in the country in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll.

Senior defender Jake Weinreb was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while sophomore forward Dale Ludwig earned PL Offensive POTW. Ludwig was also selected as American's GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week across all sports.

American took on the top-ranked team in the country Friday at New Mexico's Grange & Ashwill Memorial Tournament. Against UCLA, the Eagles led for the majority of the match before coming through with the game-winner in overtime. AU then went on to defeat UC Riverside on a second straight golden-goal victory to take home the tournament title.

Weinreb, the Tournament MVP, led a strong defensive effort for American, as the Eagles gave up a lone goal in more than 200 minutes of action. The defensive showing included a shutout of UC Riverside in which the Highlanders had only one shot on goal. The defense also turned away six corners against UCLA and another eight vs. UCR.

Ludwig, who earned Offensive MVP and All-Tournament honors, scored one of the biggest goals in Eagles' program history. Just 6:15 into extra time against the nation's top-ranked team, he took a throw-in from senior co-captain Jordan Manley and blasted it home as the Eagles upset the Bruins.

Weinreb and Ludwig were joined by three other AU standouts on the Grange & Ashwill Memorial All-Tournament Team: Defensive MVP Christian Robbs, Stephen Hauschild and Conor Osborne.

American looks to keep the momentum rolling when it returns to Reeves Field this weekend, hosting the Capitol Cup. The Eagles welcome Hartwick to Washington, D.C., on Friday at 4 p.m., before taking on Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday at 1 p.m.
