July 28, 2004

SOMERVILLE, N.J. - Todd Shagin (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), a freshman on the the American University men's golf team last year, shot a two-round score of 143 at Royce Brook Country Club to earn a spot in the 2004 U.S. Amateur Championship. Shagin is believed to be the first AU golfer who has played his way into a U.S. Amateur Championship. This year's championship will be played at Winged Foot, which has been the site of some of the most famous moments in golf history. The championship will be August 16-22 in Mamroneck, N.Y. "This is just an unbelieveable accomplishment," said AU head coach Josh Cupp. "On top of that he gets to play at one of the best courses (Winged Foot) in the sport. This is a big moment for both Todd and AU golf."
