WASHINGTON - The American University men's basketball team returns home to Bender Arena this evening after a four-game road trip to play host to Mount St. Mary's live on MASN at 9 p.m. The Eagles have enjoyed their best start to a season ever under Head Coach Jeff Jones this year and will look to extend their current eight-game home winning streak.

News and Notes

  • Senior guard Garrison Carr currently ranks 36th in the country with 121 points scored and is 43rd in the nation with an average of 20.2 ppg. He also ranks 11th in the NCAA in three-point field goals (23) and 26th in field goals (43). Carr has led the Eagles in scoring four times this season, including most recently netting 19 points at Fairfield (L 82-73, 11/29/08). The senior also scored 24 points at Jacksonville (W 75-67, 11/22/09), 29 points at Howard (W 65-63, 11/19/08) and 28 against St. Francis (W 67-46, 11/19/08) to lead the team. Carr set a career-high with 11 field goals made at Howard and matched a career-high with seven three-pointers made.
  • American matched its best start to a season since 1999-2000 with a 4-1 record to begin the year. With a win today against Mount St. Mary's, AU will improve to 5-2, a mark they have reached only once before since 1989-90 (2004-05).
  • AU enjoyed a four-game winning streak from Nov. 17 to Nov. 25, a streak which included three wins on the road. American defeated St. Francis (W 67-46, 11/17/08) at home to begin the streak and then took down Howard (W 65-63, 11/19/08), Jacksonville (W 75-67, 11/22/08) and Stony Brook (W 56-53, 11/25/08) on the road.
  • During the first three games of American's four-game winning streak, the Eagles shot better than 50 percent from the field. At Jacksonville (W 75-67, 11/22/08), AU was 24-of-43 (55.8%) from the field and 11-of-18 (61.1%) from three. At Howard (W 67-64, 11/19/08), the Eagles shot 26-of-49 (53.1%) from the field and were 9-of-22 (40.9%) from three-point range. Against St. Francis (W 67-46, 11/17/08), American made 24-of-44 (54.5%) shots from the field and was 6-of-17 (35.3%) from behind the arc. Over these three games, the Eagles shot 74-of-136 (54.4%) from the field and 26-of-57 (45.6%) from three.
  • American has won eight straight games at home in Bender Arena dating back to last season. The Eagles streak began on Feb. 10 of last season in an 82-74 win over Lehigh and includes wins over Holy Cross (W 62-60, 3/5/08), Army (W 72-60, 3/9/08) and Colgate (W 52-46, 3/14/08) in the PL Tournament.
  • In its sixth game of the season, American outrebounded Fairfield (L 82-73, 11/29/08) by a margin of 41-34, marking the first time AU has outdone an opponent on the boards. Prior to meeting Fairfield, the Eagles had been outrebounded by an average of -4.4 rpg and had been outmanned on the offensive glass by a margin of 48-34.
Milestone Watch
  • Garrison Carr (960 pts.) and Derrick Mercer (959 pts.) are on pace to become just the 27th and 28th players in AU history to record 1,000 career points this season. The last player to reach 1,000 points was Andre Ingram, `07. Ingram finished his career as AU's fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,655 points.
  • Garrison Carr set new AU and PL records last season with 135 made three-point baskets and scored 606 total points, the seventh highest total in school history. Carr is currently ranked first in the PL in career three-point percentage (42.5 %, 211-497), third at AU in career three-pointers (211), and second at AU in career free-throw percentage (86.6 %, 129-149).
  • With 404 career assists, Derrick Mercer ranks fifth all-time at AU and ninth all-time in the PL. Mercer has also played in 98 career games, including 96 starts, and is on pace to set a new AU record in both categories.
  • Jordan Nichols has recorded 74 career blocks and ranks sixth all-time at AU.

  • American holds a 31-25 advantage over The Mount in the all-time series between the teams. In their last meeting, AU came away with a 21 point victory, 66-45, in Emmitsburg, Md. Travis Lay led four Eagles in double-digits with a career-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting. AU led by seven at the half and built its lead to as many as 23 in the second half en route to the victory.
  • Today's meeting with Mount St. Mary's marks the 57th meeting all-time between the schools and fourth since the hiring of Head Coach Jeff Jones. Under Coach Jones, AU is a perfect 3-0 against The Mount with each win coming by double-digits.
