AU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Jones Signs New Contract

WASHINGTON - American University announced the signing of head men's basketball coach Jeff Jones to a new contract Thursday, August 21, 2008. Coach Jones, who returned last week from the USO Tour "Operation Hardwood" in Baghdad, Iraq., led AU to its first Patriot League Championship last season and the school's first appearance in the NCAA Div. I Tournament.
"I am very proud to stand up here today as the head coach of American University's men's basketball team," said Jones. "I very much look forward to continuing to build a winning tradition here. Being at AU has provided many opportunities for me, including being a part of "Operation Hardwood."
"It is a very exciting time for American University. This new contract ensures that Coach Jones will be an Eagle for a long time," commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill.
"Jeff Jones is a true leader, a great teacher, and has made outstanding contributions in every effort to improve this institution," added AU President Dr. Neil Kerwin.
The team's 2008-09 schedule was also announced at the press conference. Opening night celebrations for the Eagles is set for Monday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. when the championship banner will be unveiled. The Eagles will be on the road for a majority of December, but won't be far from Bender Arena, as they will face three local opponents: at Georgetown on December 4, at George Washington on December 17 at 7:30 p.m., and at Maryland on December 22 at 8 p.m. Another notable matchup will take place on February 14 as the Eagles host Colgate at 2 p.m. in a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship Game.
