WASHINGTON - Derrick Mercer (Jersey City, N.J./St. Anthony's) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and junior guard Andre Ingram (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) has been named to the PL Second Team in a vote of the league's coaches, Patriot League officials announced Wednesday.
Mercer is the second AU player to win the Rookie of the Year award in the school's five-year affiliation with the PL. Ingram also won the award in the 2003-04 season, after averaging 13.6 points per game and hitting nearly 40 percent of his three-point attempts in his inaugural season with the Eagles.
Mercer earned the award after averaging 7.7 points per game during the regular season, 24th among all players in the PL and third among freshman. He tallied 3.78 assists per game, fourth overall in the PL, and shot 45.3 percent, second among rookies. Also, Mercer provided a consistent outside threat, hitting 44.4 percent of his three-point attempts.
This is the third consecutive season in which Ingram has been tabbed for a Patriot League postseason award. In addition to being named ROY in 2003-04, Ingram was selected to the league's First Team after last season, during which he averaged 15.3 ppg.
This season, Ingram has notched 12.3 ppg, the ninth-highest average in the league, and 4.7 rebounds per game, second-best on the squad. He has also hit three-pointers at a 34.6 percent clip, finishing the regular season with 47 total treys. Ingram's 78.4 percent free throw percentage puts him seventh in the PL.
Ingram and Mercer lead the fourth-seeded Eagles into the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Friday, March 3 at Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pa. They will face fifth-seeded Lafayette in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. For tickets, please call (202) 885-TIXX.
