WASHINGTON - Freshman point guard Derrick Mercer (Jersey City, N.J./St. Anthony's) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the week ending February 12, league officials announced Monday.
Mercer earned his first career ROW award after leading the American University men's basketball team to a 1-1 week. Mercer averaged 13.5 points per game while shooting 64.3 percent (nine-of-14) on the week. At Bucknell, the nation's 24th-ranked team, Mercer had a perfect night, hitting all four of his field goal attempts, including three three-pointers, and two-for-two from the free throw line.
In a win against Colgate, which gave the Eagles their third regular-season sweep of the Raiders in the last five years, Mercer chipped in 14 points and dished out six assists.
For the season, Mercer is ranked third overall in the league and is the top freshman with 3.83 assists per game. He is also averaging 7.6 points per game, third among PL freshman.
Mercer and the rest of the Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, when they attempt to sweep the regular season series with Army for the fifth time in five years in the PL. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Christl Arena. It is a rematch of a January 18 game in which AU defeated the Black Knights, 65-63, in double overtime at Bender Arena.
