CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — American University men's basketball freshman Sam Iorio claimed his second Patriot League The Rock Rookie of the Week this season, the league office announced Monday.
Iorio posted a pair of double-doubles, averaging 25.0 points and 10.5 rebounds, to go along with 4.0 blocks and 3.0 assists per game during a 1-1 week for American.
The freshman forward connected on 17-of-29 attempts from the field, including 12-of-20 from beyond the arc. He finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and a career-high six blocked shots in Wednesday's victory over Boston University. Iorio followed the performance with 25 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Lafayette on Saturday.
His performance against Boston University was just the fifth by a Division I player in the last eight seasons ... and the second by an Eagle. Iorio joins Jameel Warney from Stony Brook, Tony Wroblicky from AU, Keith Benson from Oakland and Tony Mitchell from North Texas. The last player to finish with at least 20/10/5/5 was Wisconsin's Ethan Happ last season at Minnesota.
This is the second time this season Iorio posted back-to-back double-doubles. Earlier this season — the week ending Jan. 7 — he received his first weekly honor with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Colgate and 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds against Navy.
Iorio will look to tie Stephen Lumpkins record of three straight double-doubles when the Eagles travel to Holy Cross on Wednesday evening.
