WASHINGTON – Sa'eed Nelson finished with a game-high 21 points and Sam Iorio had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but Colgate hung on for a 72-63 victory over American in a Patriot League men's basketball game Tuesday night.
The Eagles dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the league, while the Raiders are now 7-6 and 2-0 in the PL.
Larry Motuzis added 13 points for the Eagles, who hit 56 percent from the floor in the second half.
Jordan Swopshire had 18 points to lead three Colgate players in double figures, with Will Rayman adding 15 and Jordan Burns finishing with 14.
The Raiders scored the first basket of the second half to take a 33-25 lead, but the Eagles rallied over the next two minutes to pull even at 33-33. Colgate led through most of the second half, but the edge was no larger than six points until the final minutes.
AU was within 63-60 with 2:38 left, but back-to-back buckets by Burns sandwiched around an Eagle turnover extended the edge to seven.
Motuzis buried a 3-pointer with 1:34 to play, but the Raiders made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 47 seconds to preserve the win.
American travels to Navy on Friday for its next game and returns to Bender Arena on Jan. 8 to face Army West Point in a 7 p.m. matchup.
