LEWISBURG, Pa. — Sam Iorio led the Eagles with 20 points but the American University dropped its first Patriot League game of the season, 84-53, to host Bucknell on Friday evening at Skoja Pavilion.
Stacy Beckton Jr. had 11 points in his first collegiate start in 34 minutes and Drew LaMont added eight off the bench. The Eagles shot 35 percent from the field and forced 10 turnovers.
American (3-8, 0-1 PL) struggled to make baskets early in the first half, but a 10-0 run put the Eagles within one-point, 21-20, on a layup by Larry Motuzis with 7:28 left in the half. Bucknell retook a double-digit lead before the half expired and led 35-24.
Bucknell (7-7, 1-0 PL) carried its lead throughout the second half.
Zach Thomas led all scorers with 27 points and pulled down nine rebounds in 28 minutes. Nana Foulland finished with a double-double (26 points and 11 rebounds). Bucknell shot 59 percent in the contest and outrebounded the Eagles, 44-32.
American will begin 2018 at Bender Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 2 against Colgate at 7 p.m.
