WASHINGTON – Larry Motuzis scored 21 of his season-high 26 points in the second half as American University defeated VMI, 69-64, on Saturday in a non-conference men's basketball game at Bender Arena.
The Eagles, playing their home opener, are now 2-3 overall after winning back-to-back games. The Keydets are also 2-3 following the loss.
Sa'eed Nelson finished with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Eagles, who also got 10 points from CB Diallo.
Tyler Creammer led VMI with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Greg Parham scored a dozen points off the bench.
The Eagles, who led 35-29 at halftime, opened as much as a 13-point advantage early in the second half. VMI cut the lead to 53-51 with 8:25 remaining but were never able to pull even.
American used an 8-1 run in the final 3:30 to put the game away.
